大學申請專家們從入學申請官的角度對政策變化進行了解析

十一月初，一些不同的消息渠道相繼報道：越來越多的大學在申請的時候不再要求學生的SAT分數，甚至一些一流院校也取消了SAT的硬性要求。針對這一信息，飛達學院的大學申請專家們上個月分別在Cupertino，Fremont及Pleasanton中心舉辦了教育講座，為同學及家長解讀這樣的政策變化是否會對大學申請造成影響。

飛達學院CEO魏昕老師及校長Vickie Zhang強調：“我們需要區分‘申請條件’和‘錄取條件’這兩個不同的概念。這些院校不再在申請的時候要求SAT成績，并不等於他們會發出錄取通知書。”

魏昕老師對大學申請的規劃及申請進程了如指掌。他及飛達學院的專家們一直都竭誠為家長及同學提供大學申請的關鍵信息。他們解釋道，學生單方面的優異表現（如SAT,GPA或者課外活動等）并不能直接讓學生被一流院校錄取。只有當他們在多方面的表現都持續異於常人，且在入學錄取官面前展現出一個“綜合的自己”，他們被自己理想院校錄取的可能性才會大大增加。講座過程中，飛達學院的專家們還解釋了入學錄取官們都看中什麼，以及各位同學及家長可以如何提前做好準備。

幾場講座共吸引了超過一百五十位同學及家長，當中很多人都是十年級或者十一年級同學的家長。教育講座向家長點明了此次政策調整可能會造成的誤讀，也提醒各個家庭盡早準備小孩的大學申請。飛達學院會在將來舉辦更多的教育講座為學生及家長提供幫助。

IvyMax Academy Successfully Held College Application Seminars in Cupertino, Fremont and Pleasanton Centers

College-application experts explained the changes from the admission officers’ viewpoint

At the beginning of November, several sources reported that more colleges would no longer require SAT scores for their applications. Some well-known universities are among those that eliminated the SAT requirement. In regard to this news, college-application experts from IvyMax Academy held informational seminars in the past month in Cupertino, Fremont, and Pleasanton Centers to explain whether this new change would influence the process of college application.

“We need to distinguish between the application requirements and the admission requirements,” said Shin Wei, CEO of IvyMax Academy, and Vickie Zhang, Principal of IvyMax Academy. “The universities that no longer require SAT scores for their applications do not guarantee that all applicant would receive the admission letters.”

Shin Wei has extensive knowledge on the processes of college planning and college application. He and members of the IvyMax team offer parents and students valuable insights regarding college application. They explained that excellent performance on only one aspect (for example, SAT, GPA or extracurricular involvement) does not lead to admission in a top-tier university or college. On the other hand, when the student consistently excels in various aspects and displays an “integrated self” to the admission officer, the chances of being admitted to his or her dream college are drastically increased. During the seminars, IvyMax experts also elaborated on what the admission officers really value as well as how students can get prepared.

More than 150 people attended the seminars; most of them were parents with students in 10^th and 11^th grades. The educational sessions clarified the misunderstanding that parents might have and reminded the families to plan early for the college applications. IvyMax Academy will hold more seminars in the future to continue helping parents and students.

小力量，大夢想

灣區高中生社團領袖在飛達學院舉辦慈善義賣，籌集善款幫助黃土高坡村民

2014年11月23日下午2點，一場別開生面的感恩節慈善拍賣會在飛達學院Cupertino 學習中心拉開帷幕。秉承著奉獻愛心，扶助貧困，豐富閱歷的宗旨，在灣區高中生社團領袖及社團成員的精心籌劃及积极执行下，慈善拍卖会成功募得總善款近2,000美元。此筆善款將用於幫助黃土高坡當地的孩子們獲取更多的教育資源，給予當地農民更多的物質支持。

參與此次慈善拍賣活動的共有四個社團。每個社團都精心挑選拍賣品，并選派代表主持拍賣過程。

Public Health 社團成員自己拍攝并製作的裝飾畫迅速吸引了大家的目光。在場的家長和學生紛紛讚歎團員們才華。經過激烈的競拍，Public Health社團成功拍賣出一幅金門大橋、兩幅Monterey夕陽風光的裝飾畫，掀起了拍賣會的第一個高潮。YEAH社團一系列中國風的居家用品及裝飾品讓拍賣會的每位人員興奮不已。首先拍賣的手工蘇繡如意盤以其優質的手工工藝吸引了在場的眾多女士的目光，幾番激烈競爭后，一位女士最終以180美元迅速拍下。隨後拍賣的雕龍茶具四件套、宮廷茶具七件套、白洋淀梅蘭竹菊手工屏風等均引發大家的熱烈搶拍并以高價最終拍出。團員們為所募得的善款感到興奮不已。

其後登場的Timely Rain 社團更是帶來了多種樣式的拍賣品。優質皮革腰帶、Apple TV、四種口味的葡萄酒套裝、獨具特色的青花瓷小音箱等再次點燃大家的激情。尤其是兩瓶限量版紅酒引發了大家的激烈競拍，最終一位女士以500美元的價格將其收入囊中，對它的喜愛溢於言表。同時，一盒儲存年限超過十年的普洱茶最終以150美元被一位男士搶拍成功。

最後出場的iTree所帶來的兩隻泰國布藝小象受到了在場小朋友們的青睞，最終一位小男孩以26美元成功拍得。整個拍賣過程高潮迭起，歡樂不斷。 這些社團成員都是湾区品學兼優的高中生。今年夏天，社團成員們跟随飛達的老師們前往了貧瘠的黃土高坡，當地匱乏的物資條件、短缺的教育資源深深震撼著每位團員的心，這些在美國衣食無憂的高中生們第一次領會到了生活的艱難。回到灣區以後，孩子們開始集思廣益，希望通過創建社團及舉辦一系列後續活動為村民們做出小小的貢獻。於是一個“長期行動計劃”從去年的"初行動"繼續延伸。此次拍賣會所籌得的善款，正是用於幫助黃土高坡當地的孩子們獲取更多的教育資源，幫助當地農民購買務農用品。團員們的義舉受到了家長和飛達老師們的熱情讚揚。

Small Moves Contribute to Great Dreams

High-school student clubs’ leaders from the Bay Area held fundraiser at IvyMax Academy, raising funds for the Loess Plateau villagers

In the afternoon of November 23, 2014, a philanthropic auction was held at the IvyMax Academy Cupertino Center. This fundraiser was well organized by high-school student clubs’ leaders from the Bay Area, with a big heart of helping the poor. Their mission of giving back to the community gained great support and resulted in a total amount of $2,000. The money will be provided to Loess Plateau villagers, offering more adequate supports for their education and daily life.

Four student clubs involved in this fundraiser and each of them contributed greatly to the success.

The auction started with several photos shot by members of the Public Health club. Impressed by the student’s talent, audience offered high bids for a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge and two photos of the Monterey Bay.The YEAH club brought many Chinese style home goods and decorations. An embroidered piece with a meaning of “peaceful and lucky” was favored by many ladies. After several bids, a mom won the piece with $180 offering. Items like four-piece Dragon Tea Set, seven-piece Ancient Royal Tea Set and Floral Screen were all bid with high prices quickly after.

The next club, Timely Rain, brought a variety of items like leather belt, Apple TV, Wine set in four flavors and speaker in Blue and White Porcelain print.Two bottles of limited wine pushed the event to the climax that a lady finally won the bid with an offering of $500. Shortly after, a box of high quality Puer Tea was bid by a gentleman with a $150 offering. Brought by the last club, iTree, a pair of cloth made Thailand Elephant was favored by kid bidders. At last, a young boy won the bid with $26. The whole auction process was fun and exciting.

All members of the student clubs are high-school students from the Bay Area. This summer, they visited the Loess Plateau with IvyMax counselors. These kids, who grew up in the US with adequate material supports, saw “real poverty” for the first time. All of them were deeply shocked by the poor condition of the Loess Plateau. After coming back to the Bay Area, they decided to form clubs and find ways of helping the villagers. Long-term plans were developed based on last year’s initial action. They are planning to bring the raised funds to the Loess Plateau villagers, helping them buy more materials for education and daily life. Students’ big hearts moved everyone.

This philanthropic auction event was greatly supported by IvyMax Educational Fund and Young Asian American Leaders Fund.  CEO of IvyMax, Shin Wei, Executive of IvyMax Educational Fund, Mr. Peng and School District committee member gave remarks at the beginning of this event. They all expressed high expectations on the student clubs. Organized by the students, this event was a way for them to express and show their community commitment and big hearts.

“Principal Zhang, a big earthquake in Nepal!!!” Two hours after the powerful 8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, Bin sent me this text message. He is a high school junior from the SF Bay Area. Earthquake Crisis in Nepal

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April. 30 districts have been affected, including Nepal’s two largest cities – greater Kathmandu and Pokhara. At least 5,500 are dead according to the government of Nepal.
